“If you don’t have to think about it, it’s privilege.”
It’s all too easy to look at our immediate surroundings and conclude, “inequality due to race, gender and sexuality is pretty much gone.” We often forget that we live in a privileged bubble surrounded by a country where Black people are more likely to die of gun violence, and women are taken less seriously, even in academia. How can we step outside of our sheltered position, and improve our empathy for others?
